Apple Tree Yard fans plead for more as shocking conclusion sees Yvonne's explicit romp with Mark rev
FANS of gripping BBC drama Apple Tree Yard were left pleading for an encore tonight as it ended on a major cliffhanger.
During the last few minutes of the final episode of the series it was revealed that Yvonne had asked Mark 'X' to kill George - and he had taken it literally.
Whether or not she had meant for him to actually murder George was not made clear - but it has left fans questioning her innocence in the murder.
Yvonne, played by Emily Watson, is visiting Mark in prison when he remarks: "Yvonne... what you had said to me in the flat?"
She responds: "The safe house?"

He tells her: "I never told them. I didn't."
Mark was revealed to be a fantasist in court, with the defence claiming that he had a "high functioning personality disorder" - so this could be part of his fantasy.
However there is a flashback as he asks her: "So what do you want?"

She responds, speaking about her rapist George, as they lie in bed together: "I want you to kill him. I want you to smash his f***ing face in."
Back in prison, she tells him: "People can say anything. You really can't tell the difference, can you?"
The camera then snaps to Yvonne at home, and she looks straight into it.
Viewers were shocked.
One commented: "So she DID tell him and he took it literally #AppleTreeYard.
Another remarked: "So she did tell Mark to kill him but didn't really mean it. OR DID SHE? #GotAwayWithIt #AppleTreeYard."
A fan tweeted: "#AppleTreeYard I didn't think she actually meant for Mark to kill him, until she gave that creepy look to camera at the end. Very clever."

But fans might not be disappointed - earlier today The Sun exclusively revealed that Louise Doughty is penning a sequel to the raunchy BBC drama.
Beeb bosses are now eyeing up a second series after Louise, 53, revealed her desire to write a follow-up to her bestseller which tells the story of a married scientist who embarks on a steamy affair.
A source told The Sun: “Despite the early outrage over all the sex and the brutal rape scene in the opening episode – Apple Tree Yard has proven to be a real hit.

“Louise has made no secret of her plan to write a sequel and has even told pals that she’s started drafting ideas for a second novel.
“She’s keeping her cards very close to her chest but her plan is to explore Ben Chaplin’s character Mark Costley further and look into Yvonne’s future following the trial.
“BBC chiefs are also particularly keen to do a follow-up to the debut series – given the popularity of the show and the conversation it’s generated.
“Louise has never steered clear of controversial or difficult topics so it’s sure the sequel will be just as powerful and harrowing as the first.”
